Hi this post is focused on installing SQL Express server ( which is a free distrubation from Microsoft) customised for Installing Microsoft System Center Confiruration Manager.

The first step you need before installing the SCCM product is to get the My SQL 2008 Installed and running. However the installation is a little diffrent to be able to allow the SCCM to connect to SQL Database instance.

Once you launch the setup you will find it extracting all the required files then you will see the below screen chose the Install tab

Note I have install this on my C Drive, however its highly recommended to keep the SQL Database setup on a different partition.

In this screen you can see that Setup inspects all the required rules click <OK>

On this screen click <Install>

This screens does another check and shows you the results in my case I have installed the Server as a Domain controller as its not recommended to has DC running its giving me a warding. and also its prompting me for Microsoft .NET application security

remember you should have at least .NET 3.5 version installed, just to let you know Windows Server 2012 has .NET 4 installed which should be more then enough.

Click Next

For the SCCM installation please remember to select the default Instance name

keep a note of the instance id as you will need it later and Instance root directory.

click <Next>

click <Next>

This is the most important part for the SQL installation to support SCCM as you need to select specific collection settings on the collections tab make sure you give the authorized account name and password which you want to use

and the second important task to change on this screen is the SQL Server Browser service change it to Automatic from Disabled as SCCM setup will not continue if SQL Browser service is not running

Click on the Collection tab and click customize and select SQL_Latin1_Genral_CP1_CL_AS as the Database engine.

You will get this windows once you click customize

Click <Ok> and then click <Next>

Click <Next>

Obviously, we want to send the error report to Microsoft for improving the SQL software that’s the whole point of Beta testing so

select both options.

Click <Next>

This screen shows you all the settings of the server and their status

Click <Next>

Finally you are ready to install the setup will review all the details you have selected. Click <Install>

You will need to wait for the installation process for a short while.

Finally you are done with the installation click <Close>

I will shortly post the process of SCCM installation on Windows 2008 R2 edition.

I also had some time to play around with Microsoft very famous free for use Hyper -V which is available from Windows Server 2008 R2 editions. I have found it very good but not as good VMware product though.

currently I am using the Hyper -V on Server 2012 Beta which looks very robust so far on few of my test, I am planning to write a blog post on MS Hyper- V installation and deployment too, with a coparision with VMware ESXi ( Vsphere 5)

Hope you find this post helpful.
