VMware Kubernetes Service (VKS): Kubernetes Without the Complexity

One of the headline announcements at VMware Explore 2025 was the evolution of Kubernetes within VMware Cloud Foundation through the VMware Kubernetes Service (VKS).

For years, Kubernetes adoption has been hindered by complexity. Enterprises struggled with multi-cluster sprawl, uneven compliance, patching headaches, and the lack of operational expertise. VKS directly tackles these challenges by embedding Kubernetes as a fully managed, enterprise-grade service within vCF 9.0.

Why VKS Matters

Lifecycle Automation: VKS automates the full Kubernetes lifecycle—from cluster provisioning to patching, upgrades, and decommissioning—without requiring manual intervention. Consistency Across Environments: Whether running in a central data center, regional hub, or edge location, VKS provides a consistent operational model. Integrated Security: Security is enforced at the platform level, including RBAC, identity integration via Pinniped, network policies, and continuous compliance checks. Unified Developer Experience: Developers interact with Kubernetes the same way they would in the public cloud, but IT operations are unified and simplified under vCF.

Image suggestion: Screenshot or diagram of the VKS lifecycle workflow (cluster creation → monitoring → scaling → upgrade).

Developer Velocity at Scale

With VKS, developers can:

Spin up CNCF-compliant clusters directly through self-service portals or GitOps workflows. Use familiar toolchains such as VS Code, GitHub, Helm, and CI/CD pipelines without disruption. Seamlessly move between containerized workloads and traditional VMs on the same vCF platform.

Meanwhile, IT teams maintain centralized visibility and governance—ensuring developers move fast without creating compliance or security risks.

VKS in the Real World

Imagine a financial services company running trading apps and AI models side by side. With VKS:

Dev teams deploy microservices in Kubernetes for real-time transaction monitoring. Data teams spin up GPU-enabled clusters for AI-driven risk analysis. IT maintains audit trails, compliance enforcement, and disaster recovery policies automatically.

The result is not just agility, but confidence—something enterprises can’t afford to compromise.

Key Point on VKS: By embedding Kubernetes directly into vCF 9.0, VMware has eliminated the barriers to enterprise-scale adoption—turning what was once a fragmented, complex ecosystem into a streamlined, policy-driven service.

.

This unified approach reduces operational overhead while empowering organizations to focus on innovation, not integration.

Canonical – Ubuntu embedded into VCF

The partnership with Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, was another major highlight. By directly embedding Ubuntu into vCF, VMware strengthens both performance and security for enterprise cloud-native environments.

Key benefits include:

Chiseled Containers: Minimal, purpose-built containers containing only essential components—reducing attack surface and improving security posture. vGPU-ready Infrastructure: AI/ML workloads can now run with native GPU drivers pre-integrated, making vCF the fastest path to AI-ready infrastructure. Long-Term Supported (LTS) Ubuntu Images: Enterprises get fully maintained, hardened Ubuntu releases supported by Canonical—eliminating patching and upgrade guesswork.

This collaboration ensures developers and IT teams benefit from the best of both worlds: VMware’s enterprise-grade infrastructure with Ubuntu’s cloud-native agility.

Empowering Developer Autonomy with IT Governance

One of the most important themes of the session was balance: developers need freedom to innovate, while IT needs control to maintain compliance and governance. VMware’s vCF delivers exactly that.

Robust multi-tenancy: Business units like legal, finance, engineering, and operations can each consume resources independently under central IT policy. Self-service consumption: Developers gain direct access to Kubernetes, VMs, storage, and networking resources without waiting for IT tickets. Policy-driven governance: IT admins can predefine guardrails while still enabling flexibility for developers.

Examples included services like:

Private AI as a Service – Secure access to AI images and toolchains, ready to deploy in private environments. Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) – Pre-approved versions of Postgres, MySQL, and SQL Server delivered instantly with compliance controls.

Image suggestion: Demo screenshot showing developers launching Kubernetes + AI services from a self-service catalog.

This dual approach makes it possible for enterprises to move fast without breaking things—a recurring theme throughout the keynote.

Conclusion: A New Era of Cloud-Native Infrastructure

The message from VMware Explore was clear: Kubernetes isn’t just an add-on to vCF—it’s a first-class citizen. With seamless integration, CNCF compliance, Ubuntu collaboration, and AI-ready infrastructure, VMware is positioning vCF as the most secure, most complete, and easiest-to-manage private cloud platform for cloud-native workloads.

As organizations embrace containers, microservices, and AI-driven applications, vCF with Kubernetes and Ubuntu provides a future-proof foundation that scales without sacrificing security or governance.

Image suggestion: Closing keynote slide with “Cloud-Native at Scale” headline.

Last year, Tan emphasized that private cloud would define the enterprise future. Fast-forward twelve months, and the vision has become reality. The numbers speak volumes: nine out of ten IT leaders now rank private cloud as their top strategic priority, reflecting a decisive industry shift. This isn’t about speculation—it’s about transformation that’s already underway.

With Broadcom’s deep engineering investments since the acquisition, VMware has delivered a fully integrated, software-defined platform that consolidates compute, networking, and storage into a single, unified SKU. The result is VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0 (VCF 9.0)—a platform that does not simply compete with public cloud but, in many cases, surpasses it.

Tan’s message was clear: VCF 9.0 is the enterprise standard for a new era—secure by design, developer-friendly by default, and built to deliver agility without compromise. It’s not just another release; it’s the culmination of 25 years of VMware innovation, reimagined for a world defined by AI, cyber resilience, and cloud-native scale.

The result? VCF 9.0 now outperforms public cloud—delivering stronger security, improved cost management, and unmatched control.

Breaking Down the Barriers

Tan highlighted three major friction points IT leaders face—and how VCF 9.0 solves them:

Developers vs. Infrastructure

Developers don’t want to manage infrastructure—they want velocity.

VCF 9.0 unifies containers and VMs, delivering “infrastructure at the speed of the developer.”

Siloed IT Teams

Networking, storage, compute, and security teams often speak different languages.

VCF 9.0 unites them under one seamless platform, accelerating app deployment and reducing operational complexity.

Security vs. Agility

Businesses often trade off speed for protection.

VCF 9.0 comes with integrated, built-in security tools, removing the need for endless add-ons.

Customer Spotlight: Barclays

Stephen Flaherty, Global Head of Infrastructure at Barclays, shared how VCF underpins their mission-critical systems. For Barclays, private cloud is “the lifeblood of all technology across the market.” With AI workloads rapidly emerging, they’re bullish on VCF 9.0 as the foundation to host AI models on-premises with the elasticity, compliance, and security of public cloud—delivered within their own environment.

Barclays’ engineers are already evolving into poly-skilled teams, benefiting from the unified approach. Flaherty described the rollout of VCF 9.0 as “the first time we expect our engineers to have a true public-cloud-like experience on-prem.”

Closing Notes: A 25-Year Journey, A New Beginning

As the keynote drew to a close, Hock Tan reminded attendees that VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0 is more than just a product launch—it is the culmination of 25 years of VMware innovation. From the early days of server virtualization to the rise of the software-defined data center, VMware has consistently redefined the enterprise technology landscape.

Tan underscored that VCF 9.0 is not just about running workloads; it’s about enabling IT leaders to step into a new role: becoming the heroes of their organizations. With this platform, IT is no longer confined to managing infrastructure—it becomes a driver of business value, resilience, and competitive advantage.

“We want to make you a hero—the person who drives huge impact in your organization.” – Hock Tan

The message was clear: VMware’s journey has always been about transformation, but VCF 9.0 is where transformation becomes empowerment. It gives developers the velocity they crave, provides enterprises the cyber resilience they demand, and offers IT teams the tools to lead with confidence.

What’s Next: Dive Deeper in Our Blog Series

Attending VMware Explore in Las Vegas is not just about the sessions—it’s also about making memories in one of the most dynamic cities in the world. Known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas offers endless opportunities to relax and celebrate after a full day at the conference.

Here are a few highlights to make your trip memorable:

The Las Vegas Strip: Famous for its dazzling lights, world-class hotels, and iconic landmarks like the Bellagio Fountains, the Eiffel Tower replica at Paris Las Vegas, and The Venetian’s Grand Canal.

Shows & Entertainment: From Cirque du Soleil productions to headline concerts and magic shows, Vegas offers some of the best live entertainment anywhere.

Culinary Experiences: The city is home to Michelin-starred restaurants, celebrity chef dining, and an incredible variety of global cuisines—from fine dining to indulgent buffets.

Unique Attractions: Ride the High Roller observation wheel at The LINQ, explore the Neon Museum, or take a gondola ride at The Venetian.

Day Trips: For those who want to venture beyond the city, the Grand Canyon and Red Rock Canyon offer breathtaking natural beauty just a short drive away.

Top Tips for First-Time Las Vegas Visitors

To make your trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible, here are a few practical tips:

Stay Hydrated: The desert climate can be very dry, so carry water with you—even indoors, the air conditioning can be dehydrating.

Comfortable Footwear: The Strip looks walkable but distances are much longer than they appear. Expect 10,000+ steps a day.

Budget Smartly: Las Vegas offers everything from quick bites to luxury dining. Plan a mix so you can enjoy without overspending.

Plan Transport: Walking, rideshares, and the monorail are the best ways to get around. Driving on the Strip can be time-consuming.

Balance Work & Play: Build in time to enjoy the city outside of the conference—whether that’s an evening show, a poolside break, or sightseeing.

Final Thoughts

Being invited by the VMware Bloggers Program to cover this event is both an honor and a source of pride. Having attended several VMware events in the past, this feels truly special—not just because of the scale and energy of Explore Las Vegas, but because it represents an opportunity to share insights, amplify community voices, and contribute to a global conversation on innovation.

With VMware Explore beginning next Monday, now is the time to fine-tune your agenda and get ready for a week filled with knowledge, networking, and inspiration—not to mention the chance to enjoy everything that Las Vegas has to offer.
